The VMF supports Operation Posidonia in restoring underwater seagrass meadows

The VanDyson Marine Fund (VMF) is excited to be supporting Operation Posidonia which is a flagship project of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS).

The aim of Operation Posidonia is to restore slow-growing seagrass meadows of Posidonia australis, that grow in the southern half of Australia.

The problem is sea grass is disappearing at a rate similar to coral reefs due to human activity, water quality, boat chain moorings etc. and may become locally extinct from some NSW estuaries within the next 15 years.

The good news is that new conservation actions are reversing current trends. For example, Operation Posidonia’s restoration trials in Port Stephens show very promising results with
survival of 70 % of planted shoots after 5 months.
